Hand-hammered copper serving tray with a scalloped edge, made in Lahore

Scalloped Copper Thaal

$140.00

Before each of us had a plate, there was the thaal — one wide round tray the food came out on, the family gathered around to eat from it together. This one is hand-hammered from pure copper in Lahore and finished with a food-safe lacquer, its scalloped edge setting it...

The Craft

Hand-Hammering

Raised from a flat sheet under thousands of hammer blows, the dimpled surface a record of the making.

Used in this piece

Cutwork

Openwork lace pierced clean through the metal by hand with a fine needle.

Engraving / Qalamzani

Cut into the metal line by line with a fine steel chisel, the qalam.

Naqsheen

Floral and geometric patterns chased into the surface freehand by the naqash.

Sand Casting

Molten brass poured into a sand mould packed by hand, then broken open to free the piece.

A Note from Amara
Before each of us had our own plate, there was the thaal — one wide tray the food came out on, everyone eating from it together. I kept the scalloped edge because it is the small thing that lifts it past a plain round tray. Hand-hammered from copper in our Lahore workshop.
