Round hand-hammered copper karahi with two ring handles, made in Peshawar

Round Hammered Copper Karahi

$260.00

A karahi is the sound of a kitchen at full tilt — the fast sizzle of karahi gosht, the hiss of a bhuna coming together at the last minute. Round, with two ring handles to grip, this round hammered copper karahi is made for exactly that kind of cooking: heat...

The Craft

Hand-Hammering

Raised from a flat sheet under thousands of hammer blows, the dimpled surface a record of the making.

Used in this piece

Cutwork

Openwork lace pierced clean through the metal by hand with a fine needle.

Engraving / Qalamzani

Cut into the metal line by line with a fine steel chisel, the qalam.

Naqsheen

Floral and geometric patterns chased into the surface freehand by the naqash.

Sand Casting

Molten brass poured into a sand mould packed by hand, then broken open to free the piece.

A Note from Amara
A karahi is the sound of a kitchen at full tilt, and I wanted ours to be the real thing — heavy copper that answers the flame the second it arrives. It is raised and finished by hand in Peshawar, the home of Pakistani copperwork. Made to sit over fire for years and only get better for it.
