Openwork lace pierced clean through the metal by hand with a fine needle.

Cut into the metal line by line with a fine steel chisel, the qalam.

Floral and geometric patterns chased into the surface freehand by the naqash.

In Peshawar the chai josh never really leaves the table — it sits to one side all afternoon, keeping the kahwa hot. I wanted the proper old shape: a tall body, a high handle, a spout made for a slow clean pour. Hand-hammered in Peshawar the way it has been for generations.
