Hand-hammered copper pomegranate ornament that opens into a bowl, made in Lahore

Copper Pomegranate

$66.00

Across this region, the pomegranate has meant plenty and good fortune for as long as anyone can name — on the table, in poetry, at weddings. Here it is rendered in copper, and it opens. It's hand-hammered from solid copper in Lahore, the skin given a beaten texture, the fruit...

The Craft

Hand-Hammering

Raised from a flat sheet under thousands of hammer blows, the dimpled surface a record of the making.

Used in this piece

Cutwork

Openwork lace pierced clean through the metal by hand with a fine needle.

Engraving / Qalamzani

Cut into the metal line by line with a fine steel chisel, the qalam.

Naqsheen

Floral and geometric patterns chased into the surface freehand by the naqash.

Sand Casting

Molten brass poured into a sand mould packed by hand, then broken open to free the piece.

A Note from Amara
The pomegranate has meant plenty here for longer than anyone can trace — at weddings, in poetry, on the table. I loved that this one opens, the way a real one splits, so it is an ornament closed and a bowl the moment you need it. Hand-hammered from solid copper in our Lahore workshop.
