Handmade hammered copper paella pan with two handles, made in Peshawar

Copper Paella Pan

$173.00

Some pans are made to disappear into a cupboard. This handmade copper paella pan is made to sit in the middle of the table — full, steaming, everyone reaching in. It's beaten by hand from a single sheet of copper, its wide, shallow base carrying heat right to the edges....

The Craft

Hand-Hammering

Raised from a flat sheet under thousands of hammer blows, the dimpled surface a record of the making.

Used in this piece

Cutwork

Openwork lace pierced clean through the metal by hand with a fine needle.

Engraving / Qalamzani

Cut into the metal line by line with a fine steel chisel, the qalam.

Naqsheen

Floral and geometric patterns chased into the surface freehand by the naqash.

Sand Casting

Molten brass poured into a sand mould packed by hand, then broken open to free the piece.

A Note from Amara
Long before anyone called it paella, copper was cooking rice over open flame across this region. I love a pan meant to go straight from the fire to the middle of the table, everyone reaching in. Hand-hammered from a single sheet of copper in Peshawar — used, not kept for best.
